How MarketCap.com calculates crypto market cap

Every figure uses the same formula — last traded price multiplied by circulating supply — applied consistently across all coins so rankings stay comparable. Prices and supply come from CoinGecko's aggregated exchange feed and are delayed by up to a minute. Circulating supply is used rather than total or maximum supply, because counting unvested tokens inflates the cap of early-stage projects. Stablecoins are included; wrapped assets represent collateral already counted elsewhere and should be read as bridged liquidity rather than new value.

Frequently asked questions

How is crypto market cap calculated?

Coin price multiplied by circulating supply. A token at $2.50 with 4 billion coins circulating has a $10 billion market cap. Locked or unminted tokens appear only in fully diluted valuation.

What is the total crypto market cap?

The sum of every tracked cryptocurrency's market cap. Through 2025 and 2026 it has ranged roughly between $2.5 trillion and $3.5 trillion, with Bitcoin accounting for 40 to 55 percent of the total.

Is market cap a reliable way to value a cryptocurrency?

It is a size ranking, not a valuation. Market cap ignores liquidity: a thinly traded token can post a large cap because the last price multiplies against a huge supply. Read it alongside 24-hour volume.

What is the difference between market cap and fully diluted valuation?

Market cap uses circulating supply; FDV uses maximum supply. FDV is always greater than or equal to market cap, and a wide gap signals future sell pressure from token unlocks.

Do stablecoins have a market cap?

Yes — it equals the number of tokens issued, since each is pegged near one dollar. Growth in USDT and USDC market cap is read as liquidity entering crypto markets.
